Tauranga is the fifth most expensive city to buy your own home.
However Ngā Pōtiki of Tauranga Moana hopes to change that statistic.
Victoria Kingi says, “We're able to utilise special housing area across our post treaty settlement land which is being developed for residential housing.”
Last week, the Tauranga council signed a housing accord with the Government which will see an additional 1175 homes built in Tauranga.
It costs between $400,000 to $500,000 to buy a home in Tauranga, which begs the question, what avenues are being explored to support Māori families in the region.
Ms Kingi believes, “Here in Tauranga moana, a house costs five times the average whānau salary, for Māori that's nine times their salary to afford a home, an average price home.”
There are many barriers in relation to owning your own home, but the message from Ngā Pōtiki of Tauranga to councils and the Government is, that these barriers have to be broken down.
