Taniwharau was first established back in 1974.
They were originally one of two Waikato groups who represented the Tainui waka region at the Polynesian Festival, and competed for the first time at national level in 1975.
In 1981, Taniwharau were crowned Supreme National Champs under the leadership of Tomairangi Paki.
They represented Waikato in 1983, then again for Tainui waka in 1996, 1998, 200, 2002, 2005, and 2007.
As long-time exponents, Taniwharau makes their return to support the cause.
Led by Dave Thompson and Tutata Hetet-Matatahi, the rōpū holds fast to the words of King Taawhiao, "Kia mau ki te ture, te whakapono me te aroha."
Here is their poi.
