Five places in NZ have been awarded the Green Flags award, a highly regarded tourism award throughout the world. One of those places is Ruāpekapeka in Northland.
Ruāpekapeka is one of the most significant areas of Ngāpuhi and home to one of its chiefs Kawiti.
It's an honour for the Ruapekapeka Trust and quite a significant one as the benefits of working with the Department of Conservation to look after the area are now seen.
Peeni Henare says there is still a lot of work to be done to fulfil the dreams of the tribe and its significant area.
“What we want is to learn the history of the area. Secondly, we would like to attract tourists heading to the Bay of Islands and bring them to Ruapekapeka to hear the local stories.”
The Green Flags award comes from England but it's recognised throughout the world.
