There has been an increase in the public reporting of domestic violence over the festive season, and despite the harrowing workload for police, they say it's a positive sign that domestic violence is being exposed.

In the 10 days since Christmas, Northland police received 87 callouts relating to domestic violence with those arrested facing offences ranging from breaching protection or safety orders to injuring with intent.

Both the police and social services at the coalface say that publicity, education and other community initiatives are leading to more people reporting such abuse.

For years, domestic violence was something that wasn't spoken about but is now being exposed.
