Reigning champs Ngā Taiātea prepped to defend national title

  • Waikato/Bay of Plenty

Ngā Taiātea Wharekura from Hamilton, the current Secondary School Kapa Haka National Champions, are in fine form leading into the biennial competition.

School principal and head tutor, Watson Ohia told Te Kāea that while the lead-up has been full on, they've taken a calm approach to getting the work done.

With a host of experienced senior haka exponents from groups such as Waihīrere and Te Pou o Mangatāwhiri forming the team's leadership, the 40-strong squad are looking confident and excited about reclaiming the national title.

40 secondary haka teams from across the country will be descending upon Te Poho o Rawiri Marae in Gisborne tomorrow in preparation for the 4-day competition kicking off this Tuesday.
