Police are appealing for eye witnesses of the fatal crash at west Auckland’s Muriwai Beach.

Four males were killed after the Mitsubishi 4WD Pajero they were travelling in, rolled on the beach.

Road Policing Manager Inspector Trevor Beggs of the Waitematā Police says it is alleged that the incident occurred because the vehicle was traveling at speed.

"The vehicle has then either impacted with something, or else it has gone in to some soft sand and rolled several times.  This has resulted in the occupants of the vehicle being ejected from the vehicle."

Two of the deceased are aged 31, the others are aged 27 and 26.

At this stage, it's not known who was driving the vehicle when it crashed yesterday afternoon.

“Police are working with family and victim support to establish exactly where these four gentlemen were from, and they all have different surnames.”

The vehicle ended up being submerged by the tide.  A tractor was later used to recover the vehicle where it is now being examined by the Waitematā Police Serious Crash Unit.

“We've spoken to a couple of witnesses today, but we believe that there may have been more people in the vicinity who could add some detail to what we already know."

Police are still in the process of notifying next of kin and plans are also underway for a traditional prayer and blessing to be held at the crash site.
