Peeni Henare to stand for Labour in Tāmaki Makaurau

The Labour Party has finally chosen their candidate for the Tāmaki Makaurau electorate and that person is Ngāti Hine's Peeni Henare.

Selecting a candidate for the Tāmaki Makaurau seat hasn't been as smooth as Labour would have liked. Shane Taurima was the number one choice until his nomination was blocked after an independent review found Taurima misused TVNZ resources for party political purposes.

It is Peeni Henare's first time in politics, but his family has a long legacy of political standing. He is the great-grandson of the late Tau Henare who was the Member of Parliament for Northern Māori from 1914 to 1938.

Henare has his work cut out for him on the campaign trail as he has only 16 weeks to go until the election in September.
