Te Aka, based in Flaxmere is the only school care programme that is total immersion and kaupapa Māori based. It is run by husband and wife team Alayna and Thompson Hokianga.

The pair are both passionate about keeping the Māori language and culture alive, so they set up Te Aka Charitable Trust, an out of school care programme based in the Flaxmere Village, the only one like it in the country.

The programme provides cultural programmes and activities for children living in Flaxmere - all delivered in only te reo Māori.

A Māori out of school services sector report by Te Puni Kōkiri found that when Māori are looking for out of school services, they want services that connect to and reflect te ao Māori. Te Aka answers that call.

Aroha Treacher will have more on this unique programme tonight on Te Kāea, 5.30pm.
