The Department of Conservation says the female whale stranded on Patea Beach overnight has died this morning, despite the public's effort to keep her alive.

DOC staff and local iwi are currently at the beach where they will conduct a karakia. Samples will then be taken for testing and the orca will be buried.

Whanganui DOC Operations Manager, Jasmine Hessell says, "In spite of the huge effort by local volunteers and DOC staff, the large mammal was unable to be kept alive and refloated."

The Orca was found stranded at around 7.50pm last night. Soon after, a call went out to social media for people with wetsuits to head down to the beach and assist in keeping the Orca wet.
