GNS has advised there is a 30 percent chance of a level 6 aftershock in the Wellington region after the area was rocked by a 6.5 jolt yesterday afternoon.
Four people are reported to have sustained injuries as a result and assessments continue in the Wellington CBD.
At a press conference held this morning, Wellington Mayor Celia Wade-Brown commended the community for being prepared and listening to officials instructions.
The public were also advised that the railway will remain closed until further notice and all roads were being inspected thoroughly.
She also advised the public to pay attention to the GNS warning and ensure they and their families were as prepared as they could possibly be for another big shake.
