Members of Parliament have passed a bill which will see $70 million dished out to a Wellington tribe.

Parliament today passed a bill that acknowledged the Treaty of Waitangi grievances of Ngāti Toa Rangatira. Contained within that was formal recognition of the status of the famous ngeri 'Ka Mate.'

Whether we like or not, the ngeri "Ka mate" has been used by companies throughout the world, including multi-million dollar Italian car manufacturer, Fiat.

And now, Ngāti Toa Rangatira would be given exclusive composition rights for their ngeri thats found global fame.

The bill requires that where the haka is used in certain circumstances, for example in a commercial context, the authorship of the Ka mate haka by Ngāti Toa Rangatira chief, Te Rauparaha is acknowledged.

Rightfully so were the tributes flowing to Ngāti Toa at Parliament today.
