Ngāti Maniapoto's senior most kuia Ripeka Anderson passed away early yesterday morning, aged 93.

Ripeka, more commonly known as 'Nanny Ripeka', was a well-respected Maniapoto kuia and was considered to be one of the last original speakers of the Maniapoto dialect.

She was seen as an authority on tikanga, kawa, waiata and kōrero tuku iho of Ngāti Maniapoto and tirelessly campaigned for the promotion and use of te reo Māori. Very rarely would you hear her speak English.

Ripeka is lying in state at Te Tokanga-Nui-a-Noho in Te Kūiti and her funeral will take place this coming Thursday January 15 at 10am. She will then be taken to Te Kotahitanga Marae in Ōtorohanga where she will be buried.
