Ngāti Kahungunu has extended an invite to the Chatham Islands to be a part of Te Matatini next year. An invite that will help to connect the Chatham Islands to the biggest kapa haka festival in the world.
The best in the world of kapa haka are set to descend on Ngāti Kahungunu next year and they've invited the Chatham's to come along.
“We've invited them to come so that they can be involved with us and help in any way they can with Te Matatini,” says Ngahiwi Tomoana, the Chairman of Ngāti Kahungunu Iwi Inc
They have never been part of a kapa haka regional before but wanted to be involved this year by entering a team.
To help support the Matatini kaupapa, they will donate food, along with many other locals that have offered to donate food.
“All the farmers, Pakeha and Māori all want to donate meat, vegetables and fruit to help support the event,” says Mr Tomoana.
The Regional Sports Park in Hastings is the venue that will host the masses, vehicles, food stalls and entertainment.
One of the event organisers Henry Heke says “We're actually going to set up a whole village there for fitness, a vendor village, our kai stalls and artists, there's so much to do there's going to be other stages and entertainment.”
It is estimated that there will 15,000 people a day coming through the gates, all to be a part of the Matatini action.
