Showcasing the best of the best from the Lower South Island region, Ngā Manu a Tāne secures the top spot at this year's competition.

Over 200 people attended the event at the Lincoln Events centre in Christchurch and for the chair of the Waitaha Cultural Council Trust, all hope is invested into these teams to represent them well at Te Matatini 2015 being hosted by the region.

Te Ahikōmau a Hamo Te Rangi, established in 2011 and previous winners of this competition, took second place.

But it's a new team that follows Te Ahikōmau a Hamo Te Rangi for third place, introducing Te Pao a Tahu to Te Matatini.

Te Kotahitanga, a veteran team which represented Waitaha at the last Matatini held in Rotorua, will not be advancing to Te Matatini this time around.

It's been 30 years since the national festival was held in Christchurch and in 2015 history will be made again for the region.
