People wanting to argue from a basis of Māori custom will now have a new resource to draw from.

Te Mātāpunenga, a compendium of references of Māori concepts and customary law, was launched last night in Wellington.

Māori have long been fighting for Māori customs to sit equally with Pākehā law.

Last night, a group of writers launched a book which could help Māori in the legal world.

Paul Meredith, one of the writers of the book says there is real authority in Māori customary law, but in the past, those laws always sat outside of NZ laws.

The book is now available from all good bookshops throughout the country.
