Mother of intoxicated child claims she was away at a Tangi

A video which surfaced on You Tube showing a young boy around 8 or 9 years old in an allegedly extremely intoxicated state  in a skate park in Hamilton has sparked outrage on social media networks.

A skateboarder started filming the young boy and other members of his family after discovering the child was intoxicated at Clarken Road park. The matter is now being investigated by the Police.

The child claimed he had just finished a box of RTD drinks called Cody's which contain 7% alcohol. He also stated he smokes Marajuana.

A person claiming to be the boys older brother justified his intoxication, saying it was okay because he was a Māori, and that Māori are an exception to the rule.

While filming at the Fairfield Skate park today we spoke to the mother of the boy. She didn't want to be on camera but said she was away at a tangi and she had left him with a relative who gave him the alcohol.

Other members of the community we spoke to today claim it was not out of the ordinary to see youngsters either intoxicated or smoking marijuana in the area. While they mentioned they did not agree they felt powerless to stop it.
