Mother of seven Jennifer Peni, a black belt in karate, runs the Havelock North Kyokushin Karate Club in Hastings. She's been nominated for a Pride of New Zealand award, an award that recognises kiwis for going that extra mile and that's something Jen does unconditionally for her kids, rain, hail or shine.

When it comes to running her dojo, it’s family affair for Jennifer Peni and it's only natural for her to treat her students like her own children.

For the last decade she has sacrificed profit to ensure her kids flourish in all aspects of their life, and efforts have not gone unnoticed.

At 42-years-old she is a mentor, social worker, homework tutor, taxi not only to the kids but for the parents too, and let's not forget she is also a black belt.

Her students and the appreciation they have for her is obvious with most saying she is tough and like a second mother to them all.

The awards will recognise kiwis across six different areas and  from the 11th of August the public can vote for their favourite of the 24 national finalists.
