A young Māori woman born and bred in Whangarei, Minnie-May Niha has been named in the final 20 contestants of the prestigious Miss Universe New Zealand 2013 pageant.
Te Kāea caught up with her in preparation for the final competition showdown in early October.
Between waking and going to sleep each day, it's an arduous routine of exercise and preparation for this Ngāpuhi, Ngāti Hine, Ngāti Rangi, Ngāti Wai and Tūwharetoa descendant, Minnie-May Niha.
At 19 years of age, Minnie-May is studying for a bachelor of business studies at AUT.
She maintains that it's really only by chance that she entered the Miss Universe New Zealand pageant but that ever since she was a little girl, her grandmother said she would be a beauty queen.
Last month she was chosen as one of 20 finalists and whisked away to a retreat in Thailand.
The winner of Miss Universe New Zealand will represent NZ in Moscow, Russia, so Minnie-May is calling on people across the nation to support her bid to win this prestigious honour by texting MINNIE to 5484.
The Miss Universe New Zealand final takes place on October 5 at Skycity.
