Some marae in Auckland are calling for the Auckland Mayor to take a tougher stance against alcohol in the region.

However, under the current government statute, liquor outlets in Manurewa can continue to operate in their own right.

It's said there's a liquor store at every corner in Manurewa.

At a shopping outlet in Clendon, Manurewa, two underage youth say they can sometimes buy alcohol themselves.

Manurewa Marae and other marae in Auckland are calling for the new mayor of Auckland to restrict rules around liquor stores that have a strong presence in low decile communities.

Voting for local elections closes on October 9.

Rangi McLean says the challenge has been laid down by the marae of Auckland, and this is just the first of many to come.
