The ‘darling couple’ in the Māori Television cooking series, Marae Kai Masters can now spread the love with their northland community through their winnings.
The husband and wife team, Anthony and Kathy Dunn representing Matawaia Marae now hold the ultimate title of Marae Kai Masters 2016.
The news came as a huge surprise last night as the couple and their whānau gathered at their Moerewa home to watch the final episode of the series. Later that evening an unexpected visit by the producers of Marae Kai Masters, Martin Cleave, and Cindi Lucas arrived to confirm the news.
Says Kathy, “I feel humbled representing our marae our whanau our hapu our iwi”.
While Anthony says, “ I’m grateful for the teachings of our kaumatua and kuia and aunties and uncles in the wharekai and being able to pass on the knowledge and teachings to the next generation “
The Moerewa couple were one of five northland teams competing in this season’s series.
Anthony Dunn who is a carpentry student is now renowned for his fried watercress and tunutunu tuna, recipes taught to him by his uncles. Kathy, the most competitive of the pair who has an eye for detail wowed the judges with her cakes, making them the right mixture for a winning recipe.
Their constant support and terms of endearment to each other “my love” and “my darling” spread infectiously through all the Marae Teams.
Kathy says,” I don’t use te reo as often for fear of making a mistake, but in hindsight that’s how we learn”.
Instead, they studied hard and scored 20/20 in the final Reo challenge. She says, “Anthony and I have been on an amazing hīkoi of discovery and have brought Matawaia sauce to the forefront of Māori cuisine.
