Mātaatua Regional Kapa Haka Competition to be held over two days

The Mātaatua Regionals kapa haka competition will be held over two day on Saturday 16 and Sunday 17 of April.  Tūhoe will be hosting the event in Ruatoki.

Turuhira Hare, spokesperson for the Mātaatua Regional Kapa Haka event, says that there are 21 teams that have entered into the competition and that this is the first time that so many teams have done so.

The Mātaatua region has a fierce line-up of performing groups. It features the winning team of Te Matatini 2015 Te Whānau-a-Apanui as well as Ōpōtiki Mai Tawhiti who came 2nd equal with Te Mātārae I Ōrehu.

Mrs Hare says that there are many teams that have been missing from the regional competition but will be returning at this year’s event.

“Teams like Waioweka of Ōpōtiki as well as Tawera and Te Waimana Kākū who have Tūhoe links will be competing.”

The 21 teams who feature in the Mātaatua Kapa Haka regionals are Tūtarakauika ki Kahurangi, Tokatū Moana, Aokatoa, Te Mautere o Matakana, Korosins o Ruatāhuna, Ngāi Te Ranginui Pakeke, Evergreen, Waioweka, Ruatāhuna Kākahu Mauku, Ngāi Taiwhakaea, Tūtarakauika ki Rangataua Tuatahi, Tūtarakauika ki Rangataua Tuarua, Te Karu, Te Whānau a  Apanui, Ngāti Pūkeko, Ngāti Awa ki Rangitaiki, Ōpōtiki mai tawhiti, Waioeka, Tawera, Te Waimana Kākū and Tauira Mai Tawhiti.

the top 6 teams will be representing the Mātaatua Region at Te Matatini 2017.
