Masks of Māori kings' tā moko unveiled

  • Waikato/Bay of Plenty

To signal the beginning of the Māori New Year, a sculpted mask depicting the facial tā moko of Māori monarchs, Pōtatau Te Wherowhero and Tāwhiao, was unveiled yesterday at a dawn ceremony in Ngāruawāhia.
It's intended to unify the people of Waikato-Tainui as they work towards renewing the tribe's governance structure.  Harata Brown was there.
