Labour MP Nanaia Mahuta is believed to be the first female Member of Parliament to receive a facial moko while in office.

Mahuta was part of a contingent of Tainui women who received their traditional moko kauae at Waahi Pā in Huntly at the weekend.

Mahuta was tattooed on her chin by renowned tāmoko artist, Derek Lardelli.

Locals have told Te Kāea news that 14 women, including Mahuta, were tattooed at the Moko Papa wānanga surrounded by friends and family singing and supporting.

It is believed the sitting was in preparation for the 10th anniversary of the coronation of Kiingi Tuheitia next week.

Nanaia Mahuta will be the only MP in the present House of Representatives to carry the distinguished moko kauae.
