A 26 year old man will appear in the Manukau District Court today charged with unlawful possession of a pistol after the death of a two year old girl in Mangere yesterday.
The man was taken into custody after the death of the toddler on Favona Road.
Detective Inspector Faa Va’aelua says further charges will be considered at the conclusion of the investigation.
Police say while the exact cause of death has yet to be confirmed it appears the child suffered a fatal gunshot wound. A firearm was located at the address and no-one at the address had a firearms license. Inquiries are ongoing as to how the firearm was obtained.
Detective Inspector Va’aelua “The Police investigation is in its early stages and that includes establishing whether or not the death was accidental.
“This is a terrible tragedy for the child’s family and our thoughts are with them at this difficult time."
