Pōrangahau native, Joe MacDonald, has been recognised for his athletic endurance ability and will receive the Ngāti Kahungunu Active Kaumātua Award this year. However he's more than just a fitness enthusiast, he's one of the backbones of his community.
At 66 years old, Joe MacDonald is not the type to sit around and do nothing, so it's not unusual to see him running the streets of his home town.
He's an inspiration to his community by testing his limits in endurance events like the Ironman and Iron Māori.
When he's not training, he's volunteering at the local fire brigade, grave-digging for tangihanga and running the only shop in town; jobs he's been dedicated to for more than 30 years.
For Joe, there is no excuse not to train, fitting in his daily 4am trainings so his body is ready.
