Mātaatua/Tauranga moana have accepted an invitation from King Tūheitia to meet with him at Tūrangawaewae marae next month, in a move to settle any issues concerning the Kohanga Reo.
Last week the King met with representatives from the region at Tūteao marae, today a majority of the representatives welcomed the idea but say they will go with the same thoughts in mind.
Kōhanga stalwarts from the Mataatua, Tauranga region turned out to meet as one today.
According to a Mataatua, Tauranga representative, Te Wheoro Rangikotua “It's been over thirty years since I have worked in this movement and the pain of what surfaced last year remains.”
Among the many issues tabled, one took precedence. A vote on whether the Mataatua, Tauranga reps accept the invitation to attend a meeting with King Tuheitia next month.
According to Te Waiarani Harawira o Ngāi Tuhoe, “this is our first meeting of the year, this is where we can as a collective of Mataatua, Tauranga Moana come together.”
Around 50 Kohanga Reo from Mataatua/ Tauranga have travelled to Tūteao Marae, last week Kingi Tuheitia met with representatives there where he formally invited the region to Turangawaewae Marae on the 11th of April.
Now the invitation has been accepted, Mataatua, Tauranga say they will continue to hold their stance, which is transparency from the top-level.
King Tuheitia called for the tribes to reclaim their mana on water issues and now Kingi Tuheitia is calling for the cluster of Kōhanga Reo from this region to unite again.
