Kawerau suicide rate still requires attention

In the Bay of Plenty in 2010, 13 people in the Kawerau area committed suicide.  Since then, the support network for Kawerau has brought that rate down, but they believe more work still needs to be done.

Two years ago, the Kawerau community decided to take action against suicide, which some say had almost become a trend.

Today is World Suicide Prevention Day, and the Kawerau community is thinking back to 2010 when 13 people from their region took their own lives.  Last year, that number dropped to just one.

Tonight, the support net for Kawerau will launch a strategy at Rautahi Marae that pushes the message that life is worth living.
