Hokianga upset by Crowns delayed response

Hokianga allege that the Crown is continuing its gross betrayal of both Te Tiriti o Waitangi and the 1835 Declaration of Chiefs.

Over two years have passed since the Tribunals' stage one hearing in Ngāpuhi and they are still awaiting the report on the 1835 Declaration and Te Tiriti o Waitangi.

Created to listen and report on treaty grievances, there is major concern amongst claimant groups that the delay brings into question the whole tribunal process while the Crown is stepping up the pressure to enter into direct negotiations.

According to Patu Hohepa, “We want the hearts of the Crown and the Tribunal to feel the pain in Hokianga, that it's more deep-seated here than anywhere else because the Māori people had their beginnings here during the time of Kupe and that pain continues back to those ancestors.”
