His excellency Lt Gen Rt Hon Sir Jerry Mateparae made his first visit to prison as Governor-General.

Sir Jerry Mateparae presented certificates to three inmates at the Hawke's Bay Regional Prison who had graduated from the New Zealand Howard League for Penal Reform Literacy programme.

He had made a promise to the Howard League that he would attend the graduation during his visit to Hawke's Bay.

"You can see in the eyes of the guys when they got their certificate that it meant a lot to them, so if it means a lot to them it means a lot to me," says Mateparae.

The Governor-General will be spending the rest of the week in the region on various engagements.
