A homicide investigation is underway after a boy’s body police believe to be 10 year old Alex Fisher, was found yesterday in the Waitārere Beach area.

Police have confirmed the body has been removed from the scene and a detailed forensic examination of the area continues.

Alex was reported missing at 4am on Tuesday morning and a major search operation was launched to locate the young boy.

CCTV footage of Alex and his brother at around 6 pm on Monday night was also released in an appeal for information.

Manawatu Area Commander Inspector Sarah Stewart told media yesterday the boy was spotted by helicopter around 1pm and was located shortly afterwards by a ground team.

Although it is still subject to a formal identification, Police have reason to believe this is Alex Fisher.

Stewart told media she had visited the family yesterday afternoon and they were understandably devastated.

Stewart says, “There is now a considerable amount of work ahead for police as we begin our homicide investigation.”

Police say this is likely to take some time as they build a picture of the events which have led to this tragic outcome.

Appeals for any information from the public continue particularly if there were any sightings of Alex and his brother on Monday evening.
