CHUR is the name of an art exhibition based in the heart of rural town Tāneatua.  It's being held at a rundown villa on the main road of the town, bought to showcase emerging Māori artists.

Arts graduate Te Marunui Hotene (Ngāi Tūhoe, Ngāti Awa) is currently the centre of attention in his own community art gallery.

This is an art gallery in the heart of Tāneatua, in a building whose walls talk of a colourful past.

Hotene says, "The gallery was sparked up by an idea by a fellow called Totem Hugh's who just purchased this whare."

Since leaving Trident High School in Whakatāne, Hotene has been at Wintec in Hamilton studying art.
In a chance meeting with Tame Iti, he was given the opportunity to showcase his works here.

Te Marunui Hotene's exhibition CHUR finishes this coming week.
