An Environment Court decision will now allow a massive body of water to be taken daily from the Porotī Springs over the next 35 years.

What really irks the local hapū and guardians of the springs in regards to this decision is that they won't benefit nor can they even participate in what essentially a commercial transaction is regarding a resource they maintain is theirs.

For some time the water levels at the Porotī springs have been in a decline and from this week on the Whangarei District Council the Maungatapere Water Company and Zodiac Holdings are allowed to take over 20,000 cubic metres per day.
