Canoes return to the Wairua River

A moment in time following the pathway of canoes of that once travelled the Wairua River. In recent years local farmers have begun buying into the concept of caring for the Wairua River by fencing the riverbanks.

The Wairua River, 80km in length, was once a major food source for local Māori and a very busy highway for their canoes. Today is seen as the beginning of the return of Māori canoes on the Wairua River.
