Breakthrew’ is a Rotorua-based dance group helping youth explore a fusion of different dance styles.

They call themselves the Breakthrew Dance Academy.

Shanz Whare of Ngāti Whakaue says, “There are a lot of talented Māori out there that are too shy so to show it, so it's a part of what we do, we help people break through.“

The academy has been going for over a year and its focus is on all dance styles.

Shanz says, “It's for everyone there is no restrictions on dance you know and who should do it who can do it dance is eternal.”

For youth, it's fun, safe and it's free.

Kahurangi King of Ngāti Pikiao says, “It's fun and it's cool to catch with all the boys as well.”

Tutor Steve Burt says, “It's really important for the kids it's giving them the opportunity to learn how to well to look after their bodies to build confidence.”

The Breakthrew Dance Academy is open to everyone and workshops are held at the Rotorua Youth Centre every Saturday.
