A Ngāpuhi and Ngāti Raukawa dentist, Dr Scott Waghorn has provided a unique Christmas gift to the first 100 clients who arrived at his clinic in West Auckland this morning from 8am.

As a way of giving back to the community and helping boost the Christmas spirit he has offered free dental care to the lucky 100 to arrive first.

The free dental day has operated over the last three years and queues of patients keen to take up the offer have continued to grow annually.

Dr Waghorn says the key reason he provides this service is despite Government support and subsidies, people still live in chronic dental pain, and because of the cost, he offers these services especially at an expensive time like Christmas.

Māori in particular are constantly over represented in Health statistics and Oral Health is no exception, according to the latest statistics the rate of Māori children suffering severe issues with their teeth and gums has risen by 5 percent.
