Shearer resigns as Labour leader

David Shearer has announced his resignation as Labour Party Leader.

Labour officials called an emergency press conference this afternoon in which Shearer confirmed he would be stepping down.

Shearer was described as being visibly shaken and refused to answer questions over why he was stepping down leaving the press conference abruptly amidst a flurry of questions.

Chris Hipkins the Chief Whip of Labour announced that it would convene a National Council meeting to open nominations for leadership and outline rules for the next election, he estimated this would take around 48 hours and the actual election process of a new leader would take around 3 to 4 weeks.

Shearer will remain a Labour MP.
