Labour's Māori MPs strengthen support in Māori electorates

By Native Affairs , Te Kāea

Six of the seven Māori seats now sit with the Labour Party and the majority of the Party vote in all the Māori Electorates went to Labour showing a strong outcome from the Māori candidates for their party.

Leader David Cunliffe joined Mihingarangi Forbes and Maiki Sherman in studio for the Kōwhiri 14 Te Whakatau special to discuss what lies ahead for Labour.

A disappointing outcome overall for Labour sees them with just 32 seats in Parliament with 100% of polling booths counted.

In essence the Māori candidates were saviours who have managed to swing the Māori electorate vote back to Labour.

Cunliffe was saddened by the loss of four Māori candidates from the list but says the results show the Māori Caucus will have an even stronger influence in shaping future policy for his party.
