John Key told the press conference, "Throughout these years I have given everything I could to this job that I cherish, and this country that I love. All of this has come at quite some sacrifice for the people who are dearest to me - my family."
Key went on to thank his wife and family for their support throughout his term as Prime MInister and leader of the National Party.
Te Kāea reporter Heta Gardiner says the announcement was a major surprise and another press conference will be held by Deputy Prime Minister Bill English later this afternoon.
