Today the New Zealand Parole Board granted an application by Teina Pora, who has spent 21 years in prison for a crime he maintains he never committed.
Pora was 17 years old when he was arrested for the rape and murder of Susan Burdett in 1992. However, in '96 police publicly announced the arrest of Malcolm Rewa for a number of sex attacks, including that of Susan Burdett as proven through DNA testing. Pora has applied for bail twelve times but only today was granted it. Teina Pora is now 38 years old and his case for an appeal has escalated to the Privy Council.
