He Waka Kōtuia from Te Waipounamu is a combination of King’s High School and Queen’s High School and are affiliated to Kāi Tahu, Kāi Te Ruahikihiki and Kāi Te Pahi.
This will be their third stand at a national secondary school kapa haka competition.
The group was led on stage by kaitātaki tāne Tutawake and kaitātaki wahine Liliana Bardrick. Off stage, the rōpū were taught under the guidance of their tutors Komene Cassidy, Paulette Tamati-Elliffe, Angeline Kiore, Johnny Waters and Miriārangi Kapa.
The item the group has chosen to share is their Waiata-ā-Ringa,“Te Iwa o Matariki”. This song talks about Matariki as a time to farewell loved ones, make predictions on the coming year and consolidate our hopes and dreams.
