Talented film makers unite to nurture new talent

By Ripeka Timutimu

Skilled Māori and Pacific filmmakers are uniting to help encourage and nurture future filmmaking talent in New Zealand.

'Piki' is a conglomerate of successful New Zealand talent which includes Oscar nominated Taika Waititi, Oscar Kightley, Louis Sutherland, Tusi Tamasese and Madeline Sami.

The number one focus of these talented stars at this point is to find the next up and coming talent set to take the world of funny films by storm.

The talented team says, “We are looking for another project to join the slate from a new Māori or Pacific Island writer.”

The successful applicants will become part of a collaborative development process working with the other writers.

What 'Piki' are looking for is upbeat, entertaining and comic projects. The group has expressed a preference for female writers, however the request is open to all Māori & Pacific Island writers.

On the group’s website Taika Waititi wrote, "Piki also sounds like "picky" which is appropriate because we are particular about who we work with. We aim to be selective with a focus on motivated writers who show commitment and bring with them finished or near finished works that are original, marketable, and of a high standard. More important to us than developing ideas is developing talent... and making movies."
