This week Samoan Language Week, which kicked off yesterday, is being celebrated across Aotearoa, and the push is for all Kiwis to give the language, or gagana Samoa, a try.

In the last Census 144,000 people identified themselves as Samoan. Samoan is the second most spoken language in Auckland and the third most spoken language in New Zealand.

This year's theme for Samoan Language Week is "Tautua nei mo sou manuia a taeao - Serve now for a better tomorrow".

Pacific Peoples Minister Peseta Sam Lotu-Iiga says, “Drawing on the skills and expertise of those who speak Pacific languages allows knowledge to be shared and languages and cultures to be maintained and enhanced."
