Police in pursuit of offenders in the Central North Island

A public warning has been issued to residents in the Ohakune, Waiouru and Raetihi region by Police as they search for what they have described as dangerous offenders.

Police have advised residents in the area to stay indoors and for parents to consider keeping their children home from schools due to an armed police presence in the area.

At around 2.30 am this morning Police engaged in a pursuit with a fleeing driver near Whanganui.

The fleeing driver rammed Police cars and one of the occupants of the fleeing vehicle then fired shots at the two Police officers, at close range at around 3.

The occupants of the pursued vehicle are believed to be 3 males and around 2 females who then left the scene in a stolen Police car.  This Police car has since been recovered.

Police described the males as Māori.

The Armed Offenders Squad and Eagle helicopter have been deployed in the central North Island.

Police also wish to locate Dolphy Kohu in association with this incident.  Police advise that Mr Kohu should not be approached.
