Police staff are patrolling communities and the main concern at present is to maintain the well-being and safety of the public.

Two fatalities have been confirmed at Mt Lyford and Kaikoura.

Aftershocks have continued since the initial earthquake and are still occurring and Police are warning people to avoid any damaged buildings, including buildings with large quantities of glass and masonry.

Police have advised people to check social media and news reports for updates on the condition of their area.

Significant damage has occurred on the coastal route between Picton and North Canterbury and must be avoided.

Information from Police Districts, particularly Tasman, Canterbury and Wellington is still coming through and updates will be provided by emergency services throughout the day.
