Native Affairs - Vanuatu Devastation

By Mihingarangi Forbes

Over the weekend Cyclone Pam tore through the Pacific, leaving scenes of devastation in her wake.

So far 8 people have been confirmed dead but it is thought the death toll could be in the dozens.

In Vanuatu alone, it is reported a quarter of a million people spread across 65 islands have been affected.  The Prime Minister of Tuvalu says that 45% of his citizens are now displaced too, with more affected in the Solomon Islands and Kiribas.

Over the past 2 days, New Zealand has sent 3 planes carrying aid to Vanuatu including a Hercules with a cargo of generators, portable shelters, chainsaws, tarpaulins and toolkits.  There was 14 staff on board from Red Cross.

Earlier this evening Mihingarangi Forbes spoke to Unicef's Communications Specialist, Alice Clements and Red Cross' Pacific advisor, Shane La'ulu.
