Native Affairs - Brazil: Silent Genocide Part 1

You may remember reports late last year about members of an indigenous Brazilian tribe, the Guarani-Kaiowá, threatening to commit suicide en masse if they were evicted from their tūrangawaewae.  It's a story that caught our attention here at Native Affairs, so we decided to investigate.

It turns out, their comments had been mistranslated.  Instead they'd declared they'd rather be massacred than leave their lands where their ancestors are buried.  It's a story so compelling we decided to send our journalists Renee Kahukura Iosefa, Adrian Stevanon and cameraman Jacob Mokomoko to Brazil.

They discovered an iwi staring down the barrel of extinction.  This is their special report.

Reporter: Renee Kahukura-Iosefa.
