The Ministry of Civil Defence & Emergency Management has issued a Tsunami warning for the East Cape, Chatham Islands, Coromandel and Banks Peninsula.
The warning was triggered following an 8.3 magnitude earthquake near the coast of central Chile.
Civil Defence has warned people in the mentioned areas to stay away from beaches and shore areas and to share the information with friends family and neighbours that could be impacted.
All relevant authorities have been informed of the warning and the Ministry says it will issue updates on the hour as the situation is assessed.
The first tsunami activity may reach New Zealand in the areas around East Cape at approximately 00:15 on 18 September 2015.
This may be later and the first activity may not be the most significant. Tsunami activity will continue for several hours and the threat must be regarded as real until this warning is cancelled.
