Technology is vital for Maanu Paul of the New Zealand Māori Council to communicate, which is why he is saying that Māori have rights in regards to spectrum claims.
However Communications Minister Amy Adams has created a fund for Māori to settle all Māori claims in relation to Māori spectrum ownership. The proposed fund will total at $30mil.
In New Zealand, the spectrum was freed up because of the shift to digital television, this also includes developments for the next generation of mobile networks, an area where Māori may flourish if given the chance.
Minister Amy Adams is working with Māori Affairs Minister to look at how the fund can work for Māori.
