Manukau has produced some of the country’s greatest paddlers both young and old.
Many teams train at Otahuhu in preparation for the National Waka Ama Sprints Competition in Karapiro.
Te Paerangi Waka Ama club is one of the teams competing at this year’s competition. The newly formed team consists of Intermediate and under 16 paddlers.
Kaya Kora joined the team this year. She says, "It's great, I love being with the girls and being in a team, working together."
Some of the junior competitors have been putting in the hard yards training twice a day ahead of the competition.
"Yes it's tiring, sometimes you just want to be at home sleeping," said Kora.
The club can only hope that dream becomes reality when the Nationals are held in three weeks’ time.
