By Te Kāea

The new chair of the Māori Language Commission has been appointed.

Dr Wayne Ngata of Te Aitanga-a-Hauiti, Ngāti Ira and Ngāti Porou takes on the legacy left behind by the late Erima Henare.

Raised in the East Coast, Dr Ngata is an active supporter of education and Te Reo Māori, these are both major passions of his.

With the amendments to the Māori Language Bill in sight, Minister of Māori Development Te Ururoa Flavell is thrilled to have Dr Ngata on board bringing with him extensive knowledge to the role.

He will be joined by two new commissioners Professor Rawinia Higgins and Charisma Rangipunga who will be responsible for the promotion and development of Te Reo Māori.
